The following is my Personal Hunting Log, along with a few entries of my friends on their
successful nights.
I hunt using many methods, including scrape hunting, rattling, calling, trail hunting, and baiting
(legal again in Northern Wisconsin).
*Please Note* that if I mention that the deer were hit in the paunch, that this doesn't mean that
these deer were gut shot! Any experienced hunter knows that sometimes you're not presented with
a broadside shot, and due to the angle of the shot you must pass through the paunch to get to the
vitals!
I personally know of no deer that I, or my friends, have shot this year that were not harvested! We
do not take a shot if there isn't a kill shot presented.
We can all make bad shots, please strive not to take a bad shot! This is what the Anti-hunters are
looking for and talking about!
September 21st, 2008
Sorry for taking so long to get my log going. I have been tied up with work, my Father being in the
hospital, and all of the other incidental things that happen when you want to get out hunting.
The temperature was 80 degrees today, but was the first chance I had to get out in the woods, so I
took it. I am hunting one of the same areas that I did last year, where I took the doe and missed out
on the 10 pointer. I entered the stand at 4:45 pm.
7:05 - I had a decent 6 point buck (12" high with about a 13" spread) enter from behind me,
coming out of the pines into the edge of the open field. He gave me plenty of opportunities at 20
yards, but wasn't near what I am looking for. He stayed in the field.
7:14 - A large doe, followed by a screwed up 5 pointer (decent fork on one side, spike with 2 kickers
on the other) came in from North of me. They came down the road that I walked in on which ends
at the field. The 5 pointer went out to the 6 pointer and they proceeded to work their antlers together
for about 15 minutes, while the doe stood and watched. They were all around 25 yards from me the
whole time, and eventually they worked their way out of the field.
7:35 - A medium sized doe walked by me at 18 yards, and seemed to be trying to catch up to the
other deer that had just been there. She walked off as quick as she had come in. I left the stand at
dark.
September 23rd, 2008
There was a possible storm and wind coming, but I wanted to get out in the stand again. I was
hoping it would blow over quickly, or miss us completely.
I entered the same stand as the 21st at 4:45 pm.
As it turned out the storm came at 5:30, with high winds and eventually poured rain. I sat in the
stand until 6:50, and went home a little wet. I figured as long as I was in the stand I might as well
stay, but no deer were seen tonight. Not very surprising with the weather the way it was.
September 24th, 2008
Still decided to sit the same stand, but the weather was clear, with the wind going to die down this
evening. I entered the stand at 4:40 pm.
At 6:45 I had 3 deer come in from behind me. All 3 deer walked within 7 yards of me, and I am
only in a 16' high ladder stand. The first deer was a small 4 point buck, followed by the odd 5
pointer. I must make a correction, as what I thought was a 5 pointer ends up being a 6, as I got a
real good look at him while he was underneath me. The last deer of the 3 was the large doe. The
doe eyeballed me, and gave me a pretty good look, but then calmed down and walked on.
The two bucks, just like the other night began pushing each other around in the field, testing out
the antlers, and building up their neck muscles for later. They looked more to be just playing
around, and after they walked off I could still hear them for the next 20 minutes in the distance,
They never got more than 120 yards away from me, but I had enough space to get down out of the
stand at dark. No other deer seen tonight, but had plenty of geese fly overhead.
September 25th, 2008
Once again I decided to sit the same stand this evening. I know that I have been sitting this stand a
little too often, but due to the fact that I haven't spooked anything I feel better about it.
I entered the stand at 4:30 and the weather was clear and 70 degrees.
Other than a couple of squirrels the only thing I saw was the small 4 forkhorn buck, which came
through quite late at 7:15. The deer seemed to be moving late tonight.
September 28th, 2008
The weather has cooled down into the 50's and cloudy, so I hoped that the deer would be moving a
little earlier tonight. Decided to sit my same stand for the last time for a while.
I entered the stand at 4:15 pm.
5:05 - I had a small 3 pointer sneak in from behind me, and didn't hear him until he was right
underneath me. He just continued working his way down the trail.
6:10 - The odd 6 pointer, along with the small forkhorn came in from across the field. They
browsed in the field for a short time, then worked their way under my stand, and continued down
the same trail that the 4 pointer had left on.
While walking out from my stand I happened to meet a doe entering the field. She let out a quick
snort and took off, and I don't think she was spooked too bad. Nothing I could do about it anyway.
September 30th, 2008
Weather was in the 50's and cloudy. I decided to sit my main stand again, with the possibility of
harvesting the large doe. I entered the stand at 4:15 pm.
6:30 - A medium sized doe walked through at 20 yards, and continued working the edge of the field.
Eventually she walked off behind me.
6:50 - The large doe entered from across the field. She came within 15 yards of me, but was quite
leery and there was no wind to speak of. I decided it was too quiet to be able to draw on her so I let
her pass on by.
7:05 - The medium and large doe both returned, walked on by me at 20 yards, and I debated on the
large doe. It was starting to get dark and I really wanted to hold off on taking her, as she will be
what brings in the larger bucks later. I passed on the shot and watched them both walk off. No
other deer seen tonight, and the first sit here where I didn't see a buck.
October 1st, 2008
Partly cloudy and cool tonight, with a Northwest wind. I sat my main stand, and plan on checking
out a couple of other locations if things remain the same at this stand.
I entered the stand at 4:45 pm.
The only deer seen tonight came in at 6:55, and was the 3 pointer. Things seem to have slowed
down at this stand, so going to give it a break. I'll try another location for my next sit.
October 2nd through October 9th, 2008
As I stated on the 1st, I decided to give that stand location a rest. I have checked out another area,
but haven't had a chance to hunt there yet. This is due to work, 4 solid days of rain, and now having
a pretty bad cold. Nothing worse than sitting in the stand with a cold!
The local "Youth Rifle Hunt" is taking place here on the 11th and 12th, which will keep my out of
the woods for those 2 days. Hopefully this will give me a good chance to get rid of this cold, and get
ready to get back out in the woods.
Sorry for the lag in my hunting, but sometimes it just works out that way. Better to get the cold
earlier in the season than during the pre-rut and rut. Hunting has been pretty slow around here, as
the majority of the hunters I know wait until mid October before they start getting serious.
October 14th, 2008
Well I finally got a chance to get out in the stand again. I decided to sit my South stand, which I
have hunted in the past, but not this year.
I had to rush to get out there, but managed to get into the stand at 4pm. Wind was out of the
Southwest and 52 degrees with clouds.
I didn't have much happen tonight as the deer moved kind of late due, to the full moon. I did have a
doe come in just before dark, but nothing else.
I did recently purchase a new trail cam (Scout Guard 550) which I presently have out on my other
stand location. I will be moving the camera tomorrow and will post pictures of any decent bucks
that I may happen to catch.
We do have a 4 day "Doe Only" season starting on October 16th through the 19th. I don't really
plan on hunting it, but my Daughter "Ashley" plans to. I will keep you up to date with her hunt in
my log.
October 17th, 2008
Ashley was able to come down and sit this morning. She entered my West stand at 7 am and kicked
out a 6 pointer as she walked in.
At 7:30 the 6 pointer returned into the field, browsed, then moved on.
At 8:30 a 4 pointer came in with a doe behind. The doe remained in the field, while the buck
worked the edge. Ashley had a decent angled shot, and decided to take the doe. The doe only ran 10
feet before dropping.
We dressed the deer, brought it to town and registered it, and proceeded to skin and process the
deer. Ashley got a new appreciation of the work involved, as normally she has just shot the deer
then came and picked up the packaged meat.
Now that the Youth Hunt and the Early Doe Season is over, I can get down to business and get out
in the stand a little more. Not that I'm against either season, they just disrupt the normal archery
season, and stir up the deer a bit.
My Scoutguard camera has caught a nice 9 pointer coming into my stand in the middle of the
night. Hopefully as the rut approaches I can get him to show up during the daylight hours. Below is
a photo of him.
Not much excitement locally, and no large bucks to speak of have been taken yet. This will change
soon, as the local hunters are now just getting serious in their hunting.
October 20th, 2008
I decided to sit out in my West stand Tonight. The weather was clear and a cool 48 degrees.
According to the photos that I received from the stand today, there has continuously been the pair of
6 pointers hanging out there in the last hour of the day. The 9 pointer hasn't come in for the last 2
days. I entered the stand at 4 pm.
Not much to speak of tonight, as only 1 six pointer came in right at dark. With the clear cold night
tonight, I expected that the deer might move late.
October 22nd, 2008
The weather was a cold 45 degrees, with clouds and threatening sprinkles. I thought once again
that the deer may move earlier tonight. I entered the stand at 4:15 pm.
Although it looked like a great night to hunt, the deer didn't cooperate, and no deer came through. I
did see a couple on the way home, but they seemed to be moving late.
October 25th, 2008
Well the rain has subsided a bit, and I decided to get out in the stand during my oldest daughters
bridal shower. The wind was whipping around at 25 mph, and I didn't really expect the deer to be
moving much, but I had memories of a few years ago of seeing the largest buck ever during a high
wind like this. This put me in the stand tonight. I entered the stand at 4:15 pm.
As I expected no deer were seen tonight, even though the wind died down for the last 1/2 hour.
Tomorrow the wind is expected to return, with a good chance of snow and temps in the 30's.
October 26th, 2008
High winds, rain, sleet, and a little snow were the conditions tonight. Temps were in the mid 30's,
but I still wanted to get out in the stand tonight, so I crawled into the stand at 4:00 pm.
At 6:15 a small fork horn entered the field for 15 minutes, and walked the edge to my stand. As the
buck was nearing my stand, the odd ball 6 pointer entered from across the field. He crossed the
field and came over to the fork horn. They checked each other out for a couple of minutes, when the
6 pointer stopped, looked to the North, and took a good wiff of the air. He definitely smelled
something, and took off towards the woods to the north. He stopped at the North edge of the field
and seemed to wait.
Four minutes later, as if on cue, a doe entered the field and was immediately spotted by the 6
pointer. He went out to the doe, and the chase began. He chased the doe in circles through the
field, until they ran off the South end. I'm not sure what happened to the fork horn, as I was too
busy watching the 2 other deer.
I was hoping that the 9 pointer would eventually show, but darkness set in and I had to leave the
stand.
This is a good sign of the rut coming! I don't know if the doe was in estrus, but by the way the buck
reacted to her scent I would have to think she was close. We will see what tomorrow brings!
October 27th, 2008
I decided to sit again tonight, in hopes that the chasing would bring a little more action. The
weather was 35 degrees, with a pretty steady wind. I entered the stand at 4 pm.
Not sure why, but things moved late tonight and no deer were seen.
October 28th, 2008
Still sitting the stand where the 9 pointer is at. He came in at 10 pm. last night, and I still am
hoping he starts moving a little earlier. I entered the stand at 4:30.
Pretty quiet tonight, as the wind died down to a stand still. At 6:15 a nubbin buck, along with what
looked to be his sister, came in and worked their way across the open field. They stayed in the area
for about 20 minutes, browsing on the grass, then they moved off the South end. No other deer
tonight, and I will continue to monitor this spot with my Scoutguard 550 camera. According to the
last 24 hours, only a large doe came in at 8:30 last night, then a fork horn at 7:00 this morning.
Those were the only 2 deer that came through, and I will probably take a night off of this spot
tomorrow.
November 1st, 2008
Going by my trail cam, and work, I had decided to take a few nights off due to poor deer movement.
The does and fawns are still together, and the rut still seems to be a few days out. Last year I
harvest my 8 pointer on the 9th of November, so I decided to get out tonight and see if anything was
going on. I entered the stand at 4:00 pm.
I did try a little rattling and calling, along with a little doe in heat scent. I did have a doe with 2
fawns enter the field, but the doe seemed to react to the scent and shyed away from coming over to
my side. No other deer seen tonight, and talking with friends they also agree that the deer
movement is down. They have been seeing many does and fawns, but no real bucks to speak of.
November 2nd, 2008
Decided to sit tonight, even though I wasn't seeing much action on the camera. I haven't seen a
picture of the nice 9 pointer since Oct. 26th. One thing I knew for sure was that I wasn't going to
see anything from my lazyboy at home. Time changed last night, so I entered the stand at 3:30. The
weather was a warm 60 degrees and clear and calm. I knew that I stood a good chance of not
seeing anything, due to the nice weather, and that is exactly what happened. I may try using my
Tree Lounge climber the next time, and sit my South hunting spot.
I have been reading my hunting log from the past few years, and I am seeing that the lack of deer
activity during this time pretty much matches the past logs. According to them, the next 2 weeks
should bring better movement, and chances at larger bucks.
November 4th, 2008
The weather is still an unseasonably warm 73 degrees, with Southeast winds. My camera showed
very little movement last night at the stand I have been hunting. I decided to try my South stand,
where I have been having problems with the bear. With these warm temps, I'm sure the bear
hasn't denned up yet. I used my tree lounger stand and climbed in at 3:00.
At 3:15 I had a doe come running in from behind me, and she was being chased by another deer.
She stopped 15 yards South of me, and the other deer that was chasing held up behind me, so I
couldn't see what it was. As I had these 2 deer on each side of me, a decent sized bear ( 275 lbs. or
so) decided to make an entrance. He spooked the doe away, and I never got a chance to see what
was doing the chasing as that deer made an exit too. The bear worked his way behind me, but did
manage to take a couple of looks at me, even though I had climbed to 26 feet. Eventually the bear
moved off to the North.
5:25 - I had a small doe come within 20 yards of my tree as I was deciding whether to climb down
or not. I waited for about 10 minutes, then decided to climb down. The small doe continued
browsing the acorns around my tree until I got about 6 foot from the ground. She finally spooked
and ran off. This ended my night hunting.
November 6th, 2008
I have been checking my trailcam and the deer haven't been moving much at my main stand. In
the last 48 hours I have only had 1 deer come through my stand area. I decided today to put out a
stand at my North swamp stand, where I harvested my 8 pointer last year. I am going to hunt my
main stand tonight, and if no luck I will try the swamp the next time.
I entered my stand at 2:30. It was nice conditions for the hunt, but the deer didn't cooperate. No
deer were seen tonight.
November 8th, 2008
Well snow has started to fly, the wind has finally changed back to the North, and the temps are in
the 30's for highs. I am hoping that this weather will trigger the deer towards the rut. I am going to
hunt my North swamp stand this afternoon.
I entered the stand at 2:30 pm. At 4:20 a large doe with a very small fawn came in. The doe was
pretty nervous with the wind, and I hoped to see a buck trailing her. No such luck, and the doe and
fawn moved off into the swamp. Snow flurries continued to fall, and it was sure prime conditions for
deer movement, but these 2 deer were the only deer seen tonight. I was a little disappointed to see
the doe with her fawn, as that leads me to believe that the rut has not yet arrived. My future
son-in-law hunted tonight and he has a different result. He saw a nubbin buck, a spike, a fork horn,
and an 8 pointer. He never saw a doe, and the bucks left as quickly as the came, giving him no shot
opportunity.
November 9th, 2008
It was this day last year when I harvested my nice 8 pointer from my swamp stand. I didn't know if
lightning could strike twice, but it was in my mind when I walked back to my stand this afternoon.
The snow that we received was jut a dusting, and has stopped today. Other than a Northwest wind
and 28 degrees, the conditions were cloudy. I entered the stand at 2:30 pm.
The deer weren't moving much tonight, and once again I had the large doe with the small fawn
come through. There were still sounds of geese flying, and plenty of life in the woods this afternoon,
my only wish was that the deer were a little more active. According to the solar-lunar tables, this
next week starting Monday, is the best hunting time of the month for hunting. This fact, along with
the approaching rut, might happen at the same time, which should make for some good hunting.
November 10th & 11th, 2008
Unfortunately, due to work, I was unable to hunt these two days. The conditions seemed to be
perfect, other than the full moon coming (which seems to cause the deer to move more after dark.)
The snow is lightly flying, but not sticking to the ground, and the highs have been in the mid 30's.
Last night the temp dropped down to 13 degrees.
I checked my trail cam today, and I have a new 8 pointer coming into my main stand. The problem
with that stand is still that the deer aren't coming in until after dark.
My plan is to be able to get out in the swamp stand tomorrow, if work allows it. I will let you know.
November 12th, 2008
Well I did get a chance to get out in the stand tonight. The weather was mid 30's, with rain/snow
mix, and fog setting in. It looked like a great night to be out, and I heard a few other hunters
mention seeing some chasing going on last night. I entered the stand at 2:30 pm.
The fog continued to get thicker, and the temperature actually warmed up to 42 degrees while I
was in the stand. At 4:40 my large doe and small fawn came out of the swamp, and proceeded
under my stand. They browsed for a while, and I hoped that a buck would soon follow before dark.
It ended up getting dark, and no other deer came in tonight.
Tomorrow I plan on checking the trailcam at my other stand, and decide where to hunt. As of late,
there has pretty much only been movement after dark at that stand.
November 13th, 2008
Once again I decided to sit the swamp stand. I entered the stand at 2:30.
At 3:30 the large doe and fawn came through, coming out of the swamp and circling my stand. I
would like to harvest a doe, but not leave the fawn motherless, so I chose again to let the deer pass.
Even though I had a good hour or so of light left, which would have been a good chance for a buck
to come in, no other deer were seen.
November 14th, 2008
Being I have no real sign of deer movement at my other stand during the day, My swamp stand is
my alternative. I entered the stand at 2:30 pm.
At 4:20 I had a lone doe, decent sized, enter from the swamp and came underneath me. I waited to
see if it was with a fawn, which it wasn't. She walked underneath me, and proceeded to turn, giving
me a decent shot at 15 yards. I drew and took the shot, placing the arrow right where I was aiming.
She bolted and ran for about 30 yards, then let out one loud gasp, then all was silent. I climbed
down after 20 minutes.
It turns out, after dressing out the deer, that the shot went through one lung and the top of the
heart. This explains the quick kill. We will process the deer tomorrow, and will see what time I
have to do the afternoon hunt.
November 16th, 2008
I got a chance to get out in the stand, and thought I would sit the swamp stand again. I entered the
stand at 2:30 pm.
At 4:10 I had a 4 " spike buck come by at 15 yards. I was glad he came in early, and hoped that a
larger buck would follow. No such luck, and the spike buck wandered off down the trail, after
spending about 15 minutes browsing around me. No other deer came by tonight.
There has been about 12 decent sized bucks registered at the local sport shop, including one nice
massed buck that tipped the scales at 275 lbs dressed. I will post some of those bucks pictures,
when I get a chance, on the highlights page.
November 18th, 2008
I moved my trail camera to my swamp stand, as I was only getting action during the night at the
other location, with little or no buck action. I decided to sit the swamp stand this afternoon, but the
winds were out of the East, which normally isn't a good wind. I entered the stand at 3:00.
Not much happening tonight other than a small doe coming in with about 10 minutes of shooting
light left. I plan on pulling my camera on Friday to see what is coming into this stand, before Rifle
Season opens on Saturday.
November 20th, 2008
Well this is the final afternoon before the shut down for rifle season. The weather was a cold 18
degrees, with a Northwest wind. I decided to sit the swamp stand tonight, in hopes of seeing a
shooter buck. I entered the stand at 2:30 pm.
At 4:10 the 4" spike buck entered from the plantation side. He wandered the area for a bit, giving
me plenty of opportunities to take him, but I passed on him. I decided that possibly my daughter
Ashley may end up taking a smaller buck during the rifle season. No other deer were seen tonight.
RIFLE SEASON STARTS ON NOVEMBER 21ST, AND I'LL POST RESULTS HERE
November 22 & 23, 2008 - Opening Weekend Rifle Season
I placed Ashley on my main stand, and I chose to sit the swamp stand.
Pretty quiet in both locations, as far as deer movement. The first day all Ashley saw was a coyote. I
managed to see an abnormally high amount of hunters in the area of my swamp stand. In fact
there was a vehicle parked where I normally park, and that trail really only leads to one spot to
hunt, and that is my stand location. I chose not to enter my stand area, and disrupt another hunter
that morning. Instead, I found another location off of the beaten path. Unfortunately, I did not see a
deer.
On Sunday, Ashley once again sat my main stand. In the morning all she saw was a weasel and a
rabbit. In the afternoon she had a small fawn enter just as it was getting dark. For myself, I did not
hunt the am, but was able to get on my swamp stand in the afternoon. I had a fawn enter at 4:00,
stay for a while then left. Just at dark I had a large doe enter from the North. It was getting dark,
but I was able to tell that it was a doe. It could just as easily have been a nice buck, but no such
luck. I left the stand at dark.
Ashley will not be able to hunt again until the 27th, due to work and college. I will try to get out a
bit when I can, but work will take priority.
November 24th, 2008
I tried sitting my North swamp stand again this afternoon. It was snowing pretty steady, but very
light. I ended up leaving just a white dusting on the ground. This was great for visibility, and I
thought that it may get the deer moving a little earlier in the evening. As it turned out, the deer
didn't cooperate, and I saw nothing this evening. I did here a shot to the West at 4:15, and it sound
ed is if it came from the other side of the plantation that I'm hunting next to. It is approximately 3/4
of a mile wide.
November 25th, 2008
Once again I am sitting the swamp stand. No snow left on the ground, and temperature is around
30 with calm winds. I entered the stand at 2:15 pm.
At 4:20 I had a 6" spike buck enter from the North. He stopped, and I could hear another deer
coming in from behind him. I was hoping for a larger buck, but it turned out to be the fawn that I
saw 2 nights ago. The fawn busted out of there when it saw that the buck was going to chase. The
buck started to follow the fawn, but stopped for a few seconds at 20 yards. I had to make a decision
as to whether I wanted my season to end by taking this buck. Due to the lack of deer sightings, and
the fact that the deer kill is way down this rifle season, I decided to take the shot. I took the buck in
the upper neck, trying not to damage any more meat than I had to. The buck dropped where was
standing, and it was a quick kill.
My season is over, but my daughter Ashley is still planning on doing some more hunting after
Wednesday. I will keep you posted on her hunts, and how the Denninger and Waggoner crews have
done.
November 28th, 2008
Ashley has sat a couple more times without any sightings. She decided to sit the swamp stand this
afternoon, where I shot my buck. Her boyfriend was going to hunt a short distance away. She
entered the stand at 2:00 pm.
At 4:20 she had a small doe enter. She watched it for 15 minutes, and since there was no other
seeming to come it deer seeming to come in, she decided to take it.
November 29th, 2008
Ashley chose to sit my other stand this afternoon, being that she disturbed the other stands area last
night. She entered the stand at 2:30 pm.
At 4:25 she had a spike buck come into the field. She watched it for a few minutes, while she
waited for a good shot. When the shot presented itself she pulled the trigger "Click!". The safety
must have been on, so she pulled the hammer back and checked the safety again. She then took the
shot, and the deer took off running. She called me, gave me a brief explanation of the situation, and
said that she had found blood.
We tracked the buck for quite some distance ( 3/4 mile) and never found where it had laid down,
and the blood was pretty light. We tracked it for close to 3 hours, when the blood trail quit. We have
a general idea where the buck was heading, and will check it out in the morning. After tracking it
as long as we did without it laying down, I will be surprised if we find it. I expect that it was more
of a flesh wound, but you never really know unless you find it.
I did get a chance to check out how the Denninger crew is doing. They have a few of the Waggoner
crew hunting with them this year, and have not had much success. They do have 5 bucks hanging,
biggest being a decent 8 pointer, but have not seen nearly the amount of deer that they normally
have in the past. In fact I have heard of at least 10 different hunters state that they are not going to
buy licences next year. I know there are many disappointed hunters this year, including myself.
The DNR states that they have the herd size down to where they want it, and if this is what to
expect in the future I expect that they are going to lose a lot of revenue from the hunters.
November 30th, 2008
We received a dusting of snow overnight, which we thought would help in possibly located Ashley's
wounded spike buck. We went out at 9 am, once the light was good, and decided to check out the
swamp where I expected the deer was heading to. It only took us about a half an hour to locate the
dead deer. It was laying in the swamp within 30 yards of the highway, but unfortunately the coyotes
had gotten to it. The hind quarters and rectum were pulled out, and there really wasn't anything to
salvage. Ashley is done hunting today, as she has to return back to college town, but she felt better
that we did find her deer. She had hit it low, and a little further back than she had thought. It had
traveled a good mile before laying down in the swamp.
I will follow up my highlights page with any new rifle season photos, and hopefully get a chance to
get some of the local bow kill photos from the sport shop. We now have the muzzleloader, and late
doe only season to deal with, so I am not sure if or when I am going to do anymore bow hunting
this year. I will post it here if I do.
Thanks for viewing my Hunting Log, and hope to see you all next year!

December 6th, 2008
Just a quick addition. The Denninger Hunting Crew took a total of 9 racked bucks during the rifle
season. The majority of them were taken on the final weekend. They included 5 eight pointers, 2
seven pointers, and 2 six pointers. If I can get any photos of their buckpole I will post them on the
