Year 2000 Early T-Zone Doe Hunt Results! Oct. 26th - 30th The DNR has come out with the results of the 2000 T-Zone Hunt. Out of an estimated deer herd of 1.7 million deer, the number of antlerless deer taken numbered 67,241 deer. There were alot of young bucks shot during this doe season! In fact, there were quite a few "legal" bucks shot too! ***************************************************************** News connected with the T-Zone Hunt! A 39 year old Rice Lake man shot a 16 Point Buck, and when asked why he did it, he replied "I have never had the opportunity to shoot a Buck of this caliber in my lifetime, and the temptation was too great!" Well this man now faces a $2000 fine, loss of the Buck, loss of his rifle, and loss of his hunting priveliges for 3 years! I hope it was worth it! There was also a 17 year old Beloit deer hunter that mistaked a cow elk for a huge doe. It was shot at 50 yards with a 12 gauge shotgun. The elk dressed out at about 350 pounds and was confiscated. The charges for this 17 year old are still being decided upon. He did turn himself in, and that will be taken into consideration, but the DNR still feels he should be responsible for his actions. Some Wardens estimate that there were about 100 Bucks turned into them. They had no idea as to the number of bucks that were left laying. In yet another incident, a passenger in a shiner's truck took some shrapnel when the shiner, thinking he had raised his rifle high enough to shoot over the top of the cab of his truck at a deer, instead shot through the top of his cab. Come on guys and gals, do your sport proud and hunt right!! Mr- Whitetail

The Year 2000 looked like it was going to be a very good year! Many bucks have been seen, and the antler growth has been quite nice. The Archery Season opened on the 3rd week of September! The DNR has stated that there are too many deer, so they are issuing 2 bonus tags (Doe only) with the purchase of every license. I personally don't agree with the DNR and their deer count. They use the SAK ratio (Sex, Age, Kill) to determine the amount of deer in the area. This information is supplied through the kill records from the prior year taken at the local registration stations. They determine the average age of the deer harvested last year, and come up with a total herd size from that information. I don't think they can come up with an accurate number using those means. The reason I state this is that last year was the worst year for alot of Deerhunters up here (including myself), this in a year that the DNR was stating we had an overabundance of deer! Due to this so called overpopulation, the DNR has initiated a 4 day "Doe Only" gun season in late October, and another in early December. This will totally interfere with the rut, and the bowhunters chances after the first 4 day season!

The 2 photos above are Wisconsin Bucks that were taken this year with a bow. Both Bucks challenge the present State Typical Record! The Buck on the left was shot by Kevin McNevin of Franklin,WI. It was shot on October 16th in Waukesha County. It had a green score net of 191 - 193 and has a 24 inch spread! The Buck on the right was shot by Ken Shane from St. Cloud, MN. The Buck was shot in Buffalo County,Wisconsin around October 20th. The buck grossed 207 and netted 191 1/8 (green score). The 12 pointer had a 22 3/4" spread, and dressed out at 228 lbs. It was shot with a Hoyt Havoc Redline bow, at 30 yards. He double- lunged the Buck using 75 grain Rocket broadheads, from a 15 ft. ladder stand. Either of these 2 Bucks could challenge for the title of No. 1 Wisconsin typical archery buck. The present No.1 buck was shot by Fred Hofmann of Antigo. His buck was a 17 pointer, scoring 186 5/8 inches, and was shot in 1994 in Langlade County.

Ken Shane, from St. Cloud Minnesota, shot this New State Record Typical Whitetail by an archer in Buffalo County, Wisconsin on October 13th, 2000. The buck gross scored 207, netted 191 2/8ths, and after the required 60 day drying period netted 189 7/8ths. This score makes the buck the new Wisconsin State Record Typical Whitetail shot by an archer. Congratulations Ken Shane!!

Pictured above is Mike Beatty, 31, of Xenia, Ohio. Mike baggad this 250 lb. buck on November 8th, 2000, while bowhunting in Greene County, Ohio. The 39 point (I've also seen 40 stated) rack was green scored at 291 3/8. Beatty's score could best the current Pope and Young Club bowhunting record for a non-typical whitetail, a 279 7/8 buck taken by Del Austin in Hall County, Nebraska, in 1962. They are waiting for the required 60 day drying period before the official scoring can be done. Click Here to read the results of the measuring on 1-8-2001! It is also believed that Pope and Young will not recognize the new record, due to the fact that the compound bow used in the kill did not meet the requirements for Pope and Young. The buck will still however be the biggest non-typical whitetail ever to have been shot with a bow.
